Kinnykoose is the alias for solo artist and producer Kieran Sproston based in Manchester, England. Sproston’s work comprises of intimate, stripped back low-fi music utilising soft guitars, hip-hop inspired beats and introspective lyrics.
Kieran Sproston made a name for themself playing relentless indie gigs in and around Manchester through their teens. Ten years on, Sproston is studying to practice music production whilst penning tracks for the DIY solo outfit Kinnykoose.
Taking the name from Kieran’s childhood cat, Kinnykoose’s style as a writer begins with a a melancholy song on acoustic guitar before excessive reverb is utilised; add in a hip-hop inspired sub bass plus 808 kick drum and you have a recipe for the introspective tearjerkers of Sproston’s signature sound.

Take Control EP
Released over three years, Kinnykoose’s first foray into the solo project consisted of an EP posted to Soundcloud. The three song record included an extra acoustic B-Side on the “TV and Smoke” single.
The songs utilise minimal equipment to create a low fidelity style featuring self made synth sounds and the iconic 808 kick drum from classic hip hop. Kieran explores themes of substance misuse and mental health in relationships throughout these tracks with a raw, unflinching self critique of the part they play.
Biography
Kinnykoose is the alias of Manchester born artist and music producer Kieran Sproston who, having spent their teenage years writing for and performing in guitar based indie band The Rocket, crystalises their experience into a stripped back solo project of self-designed synth pads, delicate acoustics and an 808 kick.
Kinnykoose creates tracks that draw from personal experience of mental health issues and working class life in North West England; whilst often exploring uncomfortable themes, Kieran enjoys finding the humour in a topic with an aim to alleviate the tension and bring catharsis around heavy subject matter.
Stylistically, Kinnykoose’s sound draws from the reverberated soundscapes of The Cure coupled with the British hip-hop pioneers of 808 Ink. Dulcet tones of Spooky Black/Corbin can be noted alongside an aspiration to the lyrical behemoths of Arctic Monkeys.
Kinnykoose is a dark outfit of self-expression, uncompromising honesty and an experimental blend of musical influence. Sproston’s process tends to stem from reams of the written word sat idle either on page or in a notes app next to shopping lists. These musings are used to compliment hypnotic loops created late at night sat in a home studio.
